On the top floor of a substantial granite building in a quiet square in the centre of Aberdeen lies a yoga centre that has been providing a place for people of all ages to go to quieten the mind and relax the body since the early 70s.

Ian Scorgie The Aberdeen Yoga Centre was first established by Ian Scorgie back in 1960. Since Ian's death in 2004 his yoga legacy to the folk of Aberdeen continues through the work of all the teachers he has trained in Aberdeen and the Northeast. Ian was described as the godfather of Northern Scottish yoga and was one of the longest serving revered yoga teachers in Scotland.

""The word 'yoga' comes from the Sanskrit root-verb 'yuj' meaning to join or to yoke together. In other words, we are trying to bring about union...in the case of Hatha Yoga, a union of Mind and Body, so they can work in harmony.

The origins of Yoga go back to the beginnings of Indian history some 5000 years ago, when the Indus Valley was inhabited by Harappa Civilisation. Around 2000 BC tribes of Aryans migrated from Persia and parts of southern Russia to Northern India and the Indus Valley and the combination of the cultures of these two civilisations brought about Indian Philosophy as we know it today.

In the beginning, Yoga was a secretive practice, taught by word of mouth from teacher to pupil, but between the third and fourth centuries BC, a doctor, philosopher and grammarian called Patanjali, correlated the ancient teachings in written form comprising his 'Yoga Sutras'. These constitute the basis of Yoga Philosophy as it is taught today. The techniques remain practically unchanged and are as effective now as in the beginning.

There are many paths in yoga ( e.g. Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga etc. ).

Hatha Yoga as taught by many of the teachers at the Aberdeen Yoga Centre allows for gentle movements and correct breathing. The glands and muscles are stimulated into normal functioning to keep the body fit and healthy, and thus a greater awareness of the workings of one's mind and body begins to develop.
